hmmm my prep school is in tokyo so at least for one year i'll be staying there. as for uni it can be elsewhere other then tokyo, which i have not decided yet though. staying in the outskirts can be quite nice!

but i hope it's not hard to find work for a foreigner there!

anyway どこに住ますか should be どこに住ますか. missed out a character there ;)

Has anyone gone through a phase where they are too nervous to speak in Japanese to a native speaker who is not a teacher? That's what I am going through now. I've got a Japanese flatmate, yet the only thing I've said to her in Japanese is すこしだけです when she asked if I could speak Japanese (after finding out that I've been studying for a year). Yeah, my Japanese -is- pretty atrocious, but it is also at a stage where my classmates understand it, and we are happy to make small talk in Japanese when we hang out.

Oh yeah, we also used the みんなの日本語 [Minna No Nihongo] book too. I believe that it's a widely used book for beginners (and they is now a 中級 version of it too).

Thing I found hardest about Japanese? I'd say everything except pronunciation *laugh*. But only applies for individual syllables - I do not doubt that my 病院 and 美容院 sounds too similar. Particles caused me a lot of grief at the beginning (still do, は and が? バアア). And Kanji, oh how I despise thee. I know it's a necessity and all, but I just don't have a good memory for it. Add to the fact that they threw 30 new Kanjis per week for us to learn (about 5 compounds per Kanji) and I was forgetting faster than I was learning (*sad laugh*). And I suppose that one of the problem is that when I am not studying, I am more likely to type than write, and you only reinforce recognition when you type Kanji.

Yes, it's a lot of effort to learn Japanse ne sou deshou? My biggest prob is pronounciation =P Need to get rid of my Dutch accent. Im using Japanese for busy people book and it's very clear about the grammar so that's not such a big prob for me

Omg I reallly want to do that language course in Fukuoka :please

These are gramamr bits that get me every time. When I think I know the correct one, I end up being wrong :)

would it not be

どこに住むつもりでしょうか?

or would that only apply if you were not sure you were going?

yup when you use "~つもり" it will end up with the "intend to/ plan to ~" meaning.
which can be used in both cases.

どこに住みますか will be asking "where will you be staying?"
and
どこに住むつもりでしょうか will be asking "where do you intend/ plan to stay?"

which basically will have the same meaning in this case. ^^

hai, i could have sayed that "~tsumori" thing... but Ketsuko is 100% sure is staying in Japan... and the "~tsumori" is more when someone is planing to do something, so it's less sure... like 90% XD

but i may have sayed "どこに住むの?"... :sry
shall we speak more informal here? We already know eachother... ne~?

ah i see. cool. which city do you stay in?
i think the amount of stuff learned within a period of time, be it a lot or little doesn't matter. you can learn lotsa stuff but don't master them well, on the other hand learn a manageable amount and master it at the same time would be better.
though i like to learn lotsa things at one go! haha
it's gonna get harder from now on so, ganbatte!

Well, I'm an otaku, so I think I need to learn Japanese. Luckily, in my high school, Japanese is taken to be one of subjects. So I don't need to pay more for studying Japanese.

the only crazy stuff is that there are 3 ways of saying the same... 1 way for men, 1 way for verbs from 1st group and 2nd but without those whit only 1 hiragana, and 1 for special verbs and 3rd group...
japan people and their complicate way to think XD
