I'm not sure how many of you are aware of this, but LP's newest album "Minutes to Midnight" leaked onto the net last week. The first time I listened to the album in full (from beginning to end), I was...

...EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!!

I know LINKIN PARK had stated in all their interviews in the past year that they're going with a new style and direction for this album, and completely killing off the nu-metal/rap-rock style that they're known and loved for, but nothing they said could prepare me (and hundreds and thousands of others) for what was to be their first album in 4 years...

What I was so disappointed about in "Minutes to Midnight" was the following:

1. After four years, we (the fans) only get 12 NEW songs... ONLY 12!!! And one song is just an intro instrumental track, so that's basically ONLY 11 SONGS!!! In comparison to "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora", it's their longest album, but only by about 7 minutes...

2. Mike [Shinoda] only raps on TWO songs!!

3. Joe's turntable scratching is GONE!! He does some scratching on "What I've Done" but that's about it for the rest of the album.

4. There's only 2 hard rock songs, and there's only 3 songs that Chester screams his lungs out on... The rest of the songs are all emo-ballads...

My grade for the album, based on my first listen... 3/10

Pretty much, "Minutes to Midnight" is ballad-heavy album, which completely ditches the old rap-rock LP that we all once knew and presents a more pop-oriented/ballad-driven/emo/much softer LP. If you're looking for more of LP's old stuff, you're looking in the wrong place. If not, well keep on reading!! ;)

So with my disappointment, I really had to sleep on it, and I really had to think about this album. I kept asking myself, how could it take 4 years to release something like this?!?! I'm a diehard hardcore LP fan (yes, as much as I love YUI and her music, LINKIN PARK comes first for me), and I just couldn't live with being disappointed by their latest effort.

I didn't force myself to like the album. Instead, I went into listening the album again (without comparing it to their old works). I listened to every lyric, every nuance, every beat, every strum of the guitar, every bit of detail my ears could muster from the sound of the NEW Linkin Park. And then I found some interesting about each song. Rather than loving the band more, I started falling in love with the band all over again. The band has expressed their interest that they completely ditched the nu-metal/rap-rock style cuz they never wanted to be associated with that style from the beginning. They didn't want to make "THE TRILOGY" for this new album. They wanted to move on. To make the kind of music that inspired them: old-school hip hop, punk, and classic rock. It definitely shows here in "Minutes to Midnight".

I took a step back and analyzed their new style, without comparing it to their old repertoire of work. It’s a great album. Complete genius. It’s more mature, both sonically and lyrically, than ever before. The LP I knew before is in actuality STILL the same band. They’ve just grown up.

I've already listened to "Minutes to Midnights" about 50 times straight (from beginning to end) and I absolutely LOVE it!!! It's another GREAT LINKIN PARK album. It's just... different. But it's definitely more mature than anything they've done before.

And now... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE ALBUM!!!

My final grade for the album... 9/10 :)

Though the album has been leaked, and I downloaded it, I still have every intention of buying the album. In fact, I've already bought the "Minutes to Midnight" + LPTV SEASON PASS (with two bonus tracks) at the iTunes store. AND, I've already pre-ordered my copy of the "Minutes to Midnight" SUPER FAN CD+DVD EDITION" (yes, the $100 package)!! XD

In any case, please (everyone), share your thoughts on the new album here!! :biggrin

Linkin Park, WHAT IS THIS??

Your music has matured?? How did you do that? Almost every line is important in every song of MtM...

Wow...

Linkin Park has stepped up their performance. Vocals, rhymes, guitars, bass, drums, beats, electronic stuff, and your samples!
No more nu-metal, but more meaningful and haunting songs.
Minutes to Midnight is infused with lots of emotions..maybe that's why the album took 4 yrears to make.
You can feel the anger, sadness, loneliness, pity, hate, love,
regret, repentance
and happiness in this record...
This record is about yourself, your relationship with other people and your political awareness.
The heavy tracks in MtM sure rock! And the ballads will surely bring a specific emotion and feeling every time you listen to it,
maybe it can make your eyes teary... :(

GREAT JOB LINKIN PARK!!!
Goodbye In The End and Numb.
Welcome Leave Out All The Rest. :)

Yeah i heard it on youtube actually, coz i din DL the songs yet. I dont use bittorent anymore.

so anyway, the first full album i have was Meteora by them. And i really love that album. I remember listening to it when i was revising haha XD but it was fun. And i love Chester's screaming in there and Mike's rapping is just cool. and the things they sing about really connects to my life at some point.

So the first time i listened to the new album, i was like..."omg...they've changed a lot!" i mean, it's packed with mostly slower songs.

Only a few rockier stuffs. Bleed It Out is like a chanting song!

Anyway, i like these few:
Shadows Of The Day---> the beginning drumming reminds me of The Fray's Over mY Head ^^ but i love this song. it's a good ballad.
Hands Held High ---> it's like choirs in the background XD

I find that i can't seem to finish listening to some of the ballads this time. It's kinda draggy u know...

Then, i find that Chester's screaming is somehow...very strained this time. i prefer his in Meteora.

Anyway, overall i give it 8/10.

and yes, where is Mike??? this album lacked his rapping, definitely. i miss him! maybe coz of the style this time, he doesn't need to rap that much anymore.

i still prefer their nu-metal style. i like faster and loud songs.

but i think this change is ok. It makes them more versatile i guess. Is this a year of changes? There's Avril's TBDT with a whole different style *although i do like her faster tracks here*, and now LP's ballads.

I wasn't really a big Linkin Park fan before this. Minutes to Midnight struck me as quite disappointing when I bought it. I can't say that LP has matured.. because I am not as fmailiar with all their old songs as you guys are. However, I can see that these are really sensitive, heartfelt songs.

My recommendations are: What I've done! ( the video and this song are simply epic!), Leave out all the Rest, Shadow of the Day. I think it's a great change from their usual screaming ( i'm not a diehard fan) .. and they'll continue to be one of the most successful american rock bands for a long, long time!

Troglodyte with a change of heart.

I'm not really a "fan" but I like some of their songs. Their hip hop+rock mix is very unique but sometimes it just sounds like complete crap. Fort Minor is okay but those songs are just songs I don't feel like I would ever put deep feelings into if I were to sing them. I would say that Numb, In the End, and Breaking the Habit are probably the songs I actually enjoy listening to even till this day. The rest. . .nah. . . I haven't listened to their latest album so yeah. . .

Sorry for the put down as much...As I don't hear their music (not one of it) Well If I could hear it I would probably like it, but as I would like to stay with Yui.

that's the right thing to do, pinku! buy it! heheh...

@ the others..
for me, their change of style is perfect.. i mean, i used to listen to lots of metal music back then...but now, i don't know, i got interested to classical and then JPop/Jrock.....

i bought a CD of Minutes to Midnight for my friend...well, i hoped that he will like it because the songs of Linkin Park he has heard was only In The End, Crawling and other radio stuff... and other artists he just listens to was pop/rock artists and YUI. i said to him that before judging a song, he must listen to the whole track first for 4-5 times.
the result....: he became addicted to the whole album and thanked me a lot for giving the CD to him as a present. he listens to the CD everyday (maybe as i am writing this he is listening to the CD) and he memorized all the song lyrics...

the album: melodic with a few heavy tracks = epic album. that is truly Linkin Park.

as of now, after a month, Minutes to Midnight has already sold over 3 million copies worldwide and is still increasing.

their new album is too different from the previous ones... in this album, they obliterated their old formula...even Bleed It Out and No More Sorrow is no way similar or maybe comparable to their previous songs, but What I've Done is an exception...
and thay said that they dropped the nu-metal label completely.. and all was left was Linkin Park's angst, emotion and melancholy in the songs...plus a new taste of heavy sounds like Given Up, No More Sorrow and of course everyone's favorite: Bleed It Out. The emotion and melancholy of My December was preserved in Shadow of the Day, Valentine's Day and of course, another favorite: Leave Out All The Rest.

personally, i think Minutes to Midnight is great... although it's different from the other two albums that they had, this one explores other musical possibilities for Linkin Park... Alternative rock, metal, hiphop, electronica-- it's still in there... but included here is a song with a punk feel (Given Up)...Minutes to Midnight has less rapping, but more singing...

i think minutes to midnight was a really brave thing to do even with all the money they had already. it was totally different from what they were famous for which was rapcore and screamo. not exactly my favorite band but they have really meaning lyrics and is great live. at least in the one i've been to. :)

Okay. Everyone I've asked who liked Linkin Park now doesn't like them. They say that their music sound crappy... but just now, I listened and watched their video single, "Where I've Done", and I like it.

I haven't heard the entire album, but I'll check them out on iTunes first before buying their album.
